What is a fractional director and do I need one?

There is a point in a lot of businesses where things start to feel complicated in a different way. Not the early-stage, figuring-it-out kind of complicated. The grown-up kind. The kind where the decisions are heavier, the team is bigger, and the gap between where you are and where you want to be is starting to feel like it needs more than enthusiasm to close.

That is usually the point where a business needs a director. Someone at the table who has done it before. Someone who can look at the whole picture, not just their corner of it.

But a full-time director costs a full-time salary. And for most SMEs, that is not where you are yet.

That is where a fractional director comes in.

So what actually is a fractional director?

A fractional director is a senior leader who works with your business part-time, typically one or two days a week. You get director-level thinking, experience and accountability without the cost of a full-time hire.

The 'fractional' part just means a fraction of their time. The director part means exactly that, someone operating at a strategic level, not a consultant who delivers a report and disappears.

I work as a Fractional Growth and Transformation Director with SMEs and charities. I come in, I get to know the business properly, and I work alongside the leadership team on the things that actually move it forward- commercial strategy, revenue growth, structure, people, decisions.

How is it different from hiring a consultant?

This is the question I get asked most. Here is the honest answer.

A consultant typically comes in, assesses the situation, writes a report, and hands it back to you. The thinking is theirs. The doing is still yours.

A fractional director is different. I am in the business with you. I am in the meetings, making decisions alongside you, accountable for outcomes. It is a working relationship, not a project. The difference in practice is significant.

Who is it right for?

Fractional director support tends to work best for businesses that are past the startup stage but not yet at the point of needing a full-time director. Typically that is SMEs with somewhere between 5 and 50 employees, or charities with a turnover of £500k to £5m.

You might be at a point of growth that feels messy. Or navigating a transition, new markets, new structure, new leadership. Or you might just need someone in the room who has been at director level before and can help you think more clearly.

If any of that sounds familiar, it is probably worth a conversation.

What does it cost?

Investment is discussed on your introductory call, because it depends on what the business needs and how often we work together. There is no standard package, it is shaped around you.
